Tom contacted us, confused and distressed after receiving a serious health diagnosis, followed by what turned out to be an illegal eviction from his private rented accommodation.
He had lived in the property with his dependent child for over 10 years and then suddenly found himself homeless.
Although Tom had worked in Northern Ireland for well over 15 years, he had limited English proficiency and was highly distressed and unsure about where to go for help. Based on what he had been told, he believed that his only option for accommodation was to take a private rental, which he was unable to afford, especially in light of his recent serious health diagnosis.
With the intervention of our Adviser, Tom was eventually able to secure a small bungalow from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive. Plus, as he and his child had suffered a period of homelessness, he received a starter pack which provided essential household appliances, hygiene and toiletry items.
Our Adviser also applied for a discretionary support grant on his behalf to allow him to purchase furniture and bedding for himself and his daughter. This grant did not need to be repaid.
Finally, our Adviser made a referral to the Salvation Army who provided crisis support with food and electricity vouchers.
Tom’s case took our Adviser many appointments with Tom, together with a number follow up calls to Agencies to resolve. The impact of the whole situation on Tom’s health and well-being, and that of his young daughter was significant and they were very grateful for our help and support.
