Jenny contacted Community Advice in relation to a debt which was praying heavily in her mind and was exacerbating her multiple health conditions. The debts had been caused by benefits overpayments a number of years previously, but Jenny didn’t know how to go about handling them and was terrified about the impact of contacting the relevant authorities.
Our Adviser contacted the various Agencies to gain a full picture of how much was outstanding and to gain an understanding about the reasons cited for the overpayments. The amount to repaid across various agencies totalled over £19,000.
Our Adviser talked through Jenny’s options with her. Jenny explained the struggles in her life during the time in which the overpayments occurred. Once our Adviser had understood the circumstances, she discussed the possibility of applying for a discretionary waiver and encouraged Jenny to get supporting evidence from her GP and support workers.
Our Adviser completed a discretionary waiver request on Jenny’s behalf, attaching all the medical evidence to support the request. The waiver was accepted by all the Agencies and her outstanding debt of over £19,000 was waived. Jenny was extremely grateful to the Advisers at Community Advice ABC for their knowledge, advice and persistence to allow her to finally sleep at night.
